Steam Breaks Records with Two New Games This Weekend!

In addition to Valve’s digital platform, two games also had great results in the last few days.

Let’s start with Valve. Gabe Newell’s platform broke another record with 39.2 million concurrent users on Steam on Sunday afternoon. The platform continues to grow at an astounding rate. In January, Newell’s team toasted 33.6 million users, broke the 34 million mark in early March, and quickly hit 35 and 36 million. They hit 37 million in August, then quickly jumped to 38 million…

These numbers usually come when there are big games, and there were two last week. One was Path of Exile 2 from Grinding Gear Games, which we wrote about, but the Early Access launch had to be adjusted slightly due to much higher than expected interest. The other was NetEase’s Marvel Rivals.

The sequel to Path of Exile, with its action RPG genre, launched in Early Access on Friday, and although it’s paid (when it comes out of Early Access, it will move to a free-to-play model), user reviews are quite positive, with 82% positive on Steam and over 578,000 concurrent players as a record. That puts it pretty high on Steam’s top list, but we wrote about that in the news the other day. It has reached over 1 million players across all platforms.

Marvel Rivals is also off to a great start, with NetEase’s Overwatch clone attracting just under 481,000 concurrent players on Steam (480990). The game is even more successful on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. According to NetEase, the team-based, PvP superhero game has over 10 million registered players in its first three days. The fact that it’s a free-to-play title (with a monetization downside) plays a big role in this. A lot of people will pick up a free-to-play game, but the question is, how long will they keep it?

Congratulations to all.
