Obsidian Entertainment took the stage at The Game Awards 2024 to unveil the first gameplay trailer for The Outer Worlds 2. Packed with humor, action, and visual upgrades, the sequel is slated for a 2025 release on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
The original The Outer Worlds, released in 2019, showcased Obsidian Entertainment at its best. Players awoke from cryo-storage in a hyper-capitalist space colony, given full freedom to sneak, fight, manipulate, or scheme their way through several planets alongside a colorful cast of companions. The sequel was initially announced in 2021 with a teaser that offered little more than familiar visuals and a cheeky voiceover. Now, the new gameplay trailer provides a much deeper look at what’s to come.
The trailer leans into Obsidian’s trademark humor, promising “everything that should have been in the first game: more action, more weapons, and more… graphics?” The combat mechanics take center stage, featuring weapons that freeze enemies for smashing, shoot lightning orbs, and incinerate everything in their path. For stealth enthusiasts, the trailer also teases the option to sneak through a facility and silently eliminate foes with a shank.
We also get a glimpse of the game’s varied environments and the corporations’ players will encounter. These include sprawling cities, vine-covered planets, icy facilities on frozen worlds, and vibrant landscapes adorned with stunning pink trees. These diverse settings promise an even richer and more immersive experience for players.
The Outer Worlds 2 is scheduled for a 2025 release, with Obsidian signing off the trailer with a playful “stay tuned.” Although Obsidian is now a Microsoft studio, the game will be available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC at launch.
