SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio announced two games at The Game Awards, and neither of them are related to Like a Dragon (formerly known as Yakuza)!
Unfortunately, the Japanese publisher was pretty tight-lipped about both games, but let’s take a look at what we found out. During The Game Awards, SEGA confirmed that after more than a decade and a half, they are finally not just making a new version of Virtua Fighter 5 (which is what the company has been doing lately), but a new episode is also in the works. SEGA is also celebrating the 30th anniversary of the franchise, which is a bit tricky because Virtua Fighter was released in arcades back in 1993, but the console release on the SEGA Saturn (in Japan) was in November 1994.
It is not yet known when the new Virtua Fighter will be released, nor are the target platforms known. Since SEGA has been out of console production since the Dreamcast, a multiplatform release would be logical, so the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series would be logical, and maybe a successor to the Nintendo Switch would get it. The PC could also be a possibility, as Virtua Fighter 5: R.E.V.O. will be coming to the PC soon, so SEGA might not miss out on the PC, as they don’t only like fighting games on consoles…
The other announcement was Project Century. This is a new IP set in 1915 Japan. It’s a bit similar to Like A Dragon, but probably not a spin-off of it, so it could be something really unique from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios, which is putting the finishing touches on Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, a spin-off from Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, the eighth main episode. It will be released in February.
Hopefully we won’t be disappointed with either game, but Project Century in particular looks like a pretty exciting game.
