The Witcher 3: How Did This Nearly 10-Year-Old RPG Become a Phenomenon Again?!

It’s unusual for a 10-year-old RPG to hit new player records, but that’s exactly what’s happening. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is enjoying a resurgence, thanks to the release of The Witcher 4 teaser. CD Projekt’s iconic title is experiencing a new wave of interest not seen since 2023.

A decade ago, CD Projekt achieved global acclaim with an open-world RPG that amazed both fans and critics alike. While its predecessor was already highly regarded, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt immortalized Geralt of Rivia’s saga, captivating hundreds of thousands of players worldwide. Now, with The Witcher 4 on the distant horizon, Geralt’s final adventure has reached new player peaks—ten years after its original release.

The teaser trailer for The Witcher 4, unveiled at The Game Awards, not only excited fans of the franchise but also sparked a renewed interest in The Witcher 3. On December 22, the game recorded its highest concurrent player count on Steam in the past two years, with 46,656 active users according to SteamDB. This surge indicates a significant return to the beloved title as players await updates on the next chapter—though it’s not an all-time high.

The last comparable spike occurred in June 2024, when the introduction of mod support rekindled enthusiasm for the game. However, the most impressive record in recent years came in 2019, following the premiere of Netflix’s The Witcher series starring Henry Cavill. At that time, the RPG saw an astounding 103,329 simultaneous players.

Ciri Takes the Lead in The Witcher 4, Staying True to the Series

The Witcher 4 announcement trailer at The Game Awards introduced Ciri as the protagonist, sparking both excitement and concern among fans. While some celebrated her elevated role, others worried about balancing her powers, given her abilities at the conclusion of The Witcher 3.

CD Projekt Red addressed these concerns, assuring fans that they’ve carefully developed Ciri’s transition into the lead role. According to the studio, “something significant happened between the events of the previous game and the moment shown in the teaser.” They also emphasized their dedication to honoring the lore of the novels and the narrative foundations established in earlier games.

With The Witcher 3’s revival and the anticipation surrounding The Witcher 4, the franchise continues to be a cornerstone of the gaming industry. For now, fans can dive back into Geralt’s epic journey while waiting for more details about the future of this legendary series.
