Deus Ex: Mankind Divided: Even the Writer Disappointed by the Ending! [VIDEO]

Mark Cecere, who wrote not only Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, but also the previous Deus Ex: Human Revolution, expressed his displeasure with the ending.

The ending of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided was not well received by the fans, which is surprising as many may have thought they would have lowered their expectations after Deus Ex: Human Revolution. But what you can call a bad restaurant has finally happened. The food is bad and even the portions are small. The end of the game was a disappointing fight against a character that seems more like a mini-boss, and after defeating him, the credits suddenly start to roll and we realize that we’re not getting a second hub city and a few dozen more hours of gameplay…

Cecere was interviewed by From Script to Life, where he admitted that Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is unfinished. The final boss, Marchenko, was supposed to be a halfway boss, and then we would travel to another augmented city, Rabi’ah. According to Cecere, he was never the main villain behind the stories, just the muscle, and for him that’s why the ending was unsatisfactory. The situation for Eidos-Montréal was not easy, as it had to divide its resources between a single-player campaign and a multiplayer mode imposed on the game.

According to Cecere, much of the game had to be cut due to studio and funding problems. He mostly agrees with this criticism of the game, especially when it comes to the ending. And there’s not much chance of a sequel, as the studio spent time developing Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy before the Embracer Group bought the team.

A new Deus Ex was in the works at Embracer, but it too was canceled a few years later, and Cecere had nothing to do with it, though he did try to get the team from the earlier episodes back together. He would have been happy to see it finished, but he hasn’t heard anything about it since. And neither will we…
