TECH NEWS – The “Reds” didn’t want to be overshadowed by the launch of Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5000 graphics cards… and that was probably a good decision on their part.
At CES, AMD did not show the new RDNA 4 architecture, which already copies Nvidia’s naming scheme one by one, because the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 are not exactly what we expected (we expected something like the RX 8600 for example, so not only did they jump one digit to 9, which is the same as the Ryzen processors, but they also swapped the second and third digits). AMD said in vain that the RX 9070 will have a separate event for this reason, as on the Chiphell forum nApoleon said that this was a pre-planned strategy to give AMD a punchier answer to Nvidia later.
AMD, Nvidia and even Intel are trying to offer better value for money. From Intel, the Arc Battlemage B580 has shown that you can get quite good performance at a fair price, and from Nvidia, the MSRP for the RTX 5070 has been reduced (but we highly expect the card to cost over $1000 by March…). AMD is looking to change everything in the GPU market with the RX 9070, and early leaks suggest we can expect some pretty good performance. The RX 9070 XT was able to outperform the RTX 4080 Super in initial tests, and if this card is going to be in the $500-700 ($200-280k) price range, Nvidia is going to have a hard time selling it to the mainstream audience…
Reportedly, RX 9070 cards have already been shipped to retailers to sell to consumers, but due to AMD’s delay, they will have to wait a bit longer. It remains to be seen if this was really a good move on the part of the company, but so far it seems like the RX 9070 could be a good choice down the road, and initial interest in it could be quite high. The launch could be in the next few days, with pre-orders reportedly starting on January 23rd…
But it’s not official yet!
