TECH NEWS – A scary thing was reported on Reddit by a user who found that his Gigabyte mouse caught fire with huge flames…
There are some PC components that can be dangerous if misused. The mouse is not one of them. Neither would a keyboard, but this time the keyboard gets away with it: On Reddit, lommelinn reported that her room was filled with black smoke after an older Gigabyte mouse with a cable unexpectedly caught fire. He quickly extinguished the fire, but he inhaled a lot of smoke and his room is in bad shape because even his modular synthesizer has a lot of black particles in it. He survived the worst of it, but was still in shock at what had happened.
The mouse in question is a Gigabyte M6880X. It’s an optical mouse, but it’s laser rather than infrared. If it did spontaneously combust, Gigabyte will have some explaining to do. The company has already contacted the injured user, and the investigation is still in its early stages. In any case, the matter has escalated, so the company is taking it very seriously, which is the right thing to do.

“We have been made aware of the incident reported by lommelin regarding the M6880X gaming mice. The safety of our customers is our top priority and we are actively investigating this case. Our team has reached out to lommelin to offer support and fully investigate the matter. In the meantime, we appreciate the community’s understanding and patience as we work to resolve this issue,” Gigabyte wrote on Reddit.
Reddit has already done some investigating of its own, including looking at the mouse’s disassembly to see what could have caused such a fiery disaster. The only possible problem seems to be the mouse’s tendency to collect lint inside, which, combined with years of grease or other substances, could have created a hotbed. As far as the mouse is concerned, at least based on its interior and specifications, nothing like that should have happened. It is a USB 2.0 mouse, limited to 0.5A current, and should not be able to cause the plastic to catch fire as it did.
So it’s an odd case.
