Call of Duty 2025: Will it Still Launch on Prev-Gen Consoles?

There are rumors that Call of Duty will be released for two generations of consoles in 2025, which would be quite unusual.

Call of Duty is a popular franchise, so it’s common for a new generation of consoles to be released a few years after the previous one, even on the previous generation of hardware. Now, four years after the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series hit stores, last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was released for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and rumors are that the trend will continue this year…

“Call of Duty 2025 could still be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, according to sources. Supporting last-gen in 2025 is a wild decision, but the game is in development for the old consoles from what we’ve heard. This could be the reason why there can’t be two large maps in Call of Duty: Warzone at the same time,” says CharlieIntel, which is trusted for its leaks on the Call of Duty franchise, so credibility is less questionable.

The continued support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One may be surprising, but the bigger a franchise is, the more people play it on older hardware (think of games like Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto V or even Fortnite as prime examples). Sony said last year that more than 49 million people were still playing on PlayStation 4. We don’t have the same data for Xbox One, but PS4 has generated quite a few sales, so it’s no wonder Activision Blizzard is still pushing cross-gen development.

None of this is official yet, but it makes sense. If the Microsoft-owned publisher is leaving PlayStation 4 and Xbox One this year, there must be a very good reason. We’ll see.
