Hugo Martin and Marty Stratton, the director and producer of Doom: The Dark Ages respectively, wondered what Doom Slayer would do towards the end of the story.
It is inconceivable to play through a DOOM without using what the game is all about: guns. Martin says it’s a little impossible, but possible for hardcore gamers. We saw in the 2016 reboot that you could play through the story on Ultra Nightmare difficulty using only the pistol. The pistol on the unusable level was then left out of Doom Eternal, and maybe The Dark Ages won’t get it either. Martin said that if people can play through Dark Souls without taking damage, he’s confident that Doom: The Dark Ages will be beatable with just melee and the shield because they’re powerful, but it won’t be an easy task. Stratton says that’s not what they built the game for, because this isn’t Dishonored, where Arkane balanced the game for that. (Dishonored 2 had a challenge that didn’t use abilities.) In the 2016 Doom reboot, the story began with the Doom Slayer rising from his coffin. But Doom: The Dark Ages (which will be a prequel story) will not end with our hero in a coffin: “The Doom Slayer will not be locked in a coffin yet. That would be the end of the Dark Ages, the medieval chapter of the Doom saga. This is like the Chronicles of the Slayer. So if we go all the way there, it would mean we couldn’t tell any more medieval stories. And I’m not announcing any projects or anything other than just saying it’s better to leave it open. We have a DLC and things like that, so it’s not – I won’t spoil it – but it doesn’t end with him in the coffin. The story is that they collapsed a building on him and then put him in this sarcophagus that we find him in at the beginning of 2016, and that’s not how the game ends,” Martin said.
So it will either be another episode or maybe more DLCs like the two The Ancient Gods DLCs in Doom Eternal. In any case, id Software sounds like they’re committed to the medieval style, so they’ve left the door open for a sequel, either in the form of a new episode or DLC(s).
Doom: The Dark Ages will be released on May 15th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC.
