Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7: Will the Chipmaking Woes Continue?

TECH NEWS – The South Korean company was supposed to offer a system-on-a-chip (SoC) for its foldable device, but that could change.

The Exynos 2500 was previously rumored to be undergoing some optimizations that would allow Samsung to launch the SoC in the second half of 2025. There were also rumors that it would be mass-produced in smaller quantities and used in the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 7, allowing Samsung to reduce its spending on components. Now, however, a rumor has surfaced that the clamshell-shaped foldable smartphone has already passed all internal tests, but it’s powered by Qualcomm’s SoC, the Snapdragon 8 Elite, suggesting that the South Korean giant is risking its profits in exchange for better specs.

The use of Samsung’s first 3nm SoC for smartphones and tablets wasn’t specified on Twitter by @PandaFlashPro, but he mentions that Samsung has ordered a lot of Snapdragon 8 Elite, presumably because of the chip’s capabilities, so that’s probably why they decided to use it inside the Galaxy Z Flip 7. This rumor is not confirmed yet, but if a cheaper foldable device will have Qualcomm’s latest and greatest SoC, then the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will most likely be equipped with the same SoC.

The Exynos 2500 planned for the Galaxy Z Flip 7 would have reduced Samsung’s annual budget, but if the foundry can’t produce large quantities of this chipset, the company will lose money on it. In addition, there is no way of knowing if the Exynos 2500 would deliver equivalent performance to the Snapdragon 8 Elite, so there is always the risk that customers will feel they have overpaid for the device. Except that Samsung would then have to pay Qualcomm, which could make the product more expensive. It would either have to sacrifice its margin or make the device more expensive, so there would be a kind of Qualcomm tax on the phone.

None of this is official yet!
