This is one of those DOOM mods where you can’t play slow and deliberate, because even the subtitle of the mod says race against time.
Blitz: Race Against Time is essentially a coffee-break mod—you don’t need hours to finish its maps. There are 32 levels in total, but here’s the twist: you only have 30 seconds to reach the end of each one. That’s not a lot of time, and it sounds terrifying… but don’t worry, the mod delivers a fun and thrilling experience!
Doomguy has a weapon at his disposal—or rather, in his legs: he moves at a ridiculous speed of around 50 mph! The moment each level starts, you need to race to the exit before the door slams shut. You start with only a pistol, and every weapon is designed with speed in mind, pushing the chaos to a new level. Some enemies also behave differently—frequently changing direction or trying to stop you entirely.
The biggest challenge is pure chaos. Seventeen mappers contributed to the mod, so you’ll need to adapt and make split-second decisions. From dashing across collapsing rooftops inspired by Neon Genesis Evangelion to sprinting through office corridors in search of a toilet, the experience never gets dull. The soundtrack is surprisingly cool and varied—though with just 30 seconds per level, you might not hear much of it. Many levels are packed with things to see and explore. On lower difficulties, there’s no time limit, and even if you reach the exit early, you’re free to backtrack and explore at your leisure.
This results in a dual feel—blazing fast yet oddly relaxing. There are other similarly-paced mods too. Skulldash, for instance, with its 50 maps, was released over eight years ago. Blitz: Race Against Time can be found on the Doomworld forums. You’ll need a modern source port to play it (e.g. DSDA or GZDoom).
