AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT: “8 GB VRAM Is Enough!”

TECH NEWS – Frank Azor, AMD’s chief director of gaming solutions, seems out of touch with his company’s marketing message.

His statement may come as a surprise, as AMD itself has argued for more VRAM capacity on GPUs since launching the RX 7000 series. In fact, AMD mocked Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4000 GPUs for having less VRAM, which can hinder performance in certain games. Even with the release of newer generation cards, it seems that neither AMD nor Nvidia is prioritizing more VRAM, especially on cheaper graphics cards. This is evident from Azor’s statement. According to Azor, most gamers play eSports games at 1080p, so 8 GB is sufficient for them and shouldn’t be an issue with 8 GB GPUs. In this context, he was referring to the 8 GB RX 9060 XT.

Majority of gamers are still playing at 1080p and have no use for more than 8GB of memory. Most played games WW are mostly esports games. We wouldn’t build it if there wasn’t a market for it. If 8GB isn’t right for you then there’s 16GB. Same GPU, no compromise, just memory…Frank Azor (@AzorFrank)

He added that if someone needs more VRAM, there is a 16 GB version of the card available. However, the issue is not just about VRAM capacity. Many users point out that there is a problem with the same GPU naming. For example, the recently launched 8 GB and 16 GB Navi 44-based editions were released under the same name, the Radeon RX 9060 XT. Nvidia has done the same with the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti, which can be misleading.

It’s true that most players play eSports titles. According to Steam, the most popular games are Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, PUBG: Battlegrounds, and Apex Legends. These games don’t require more than 8 GB of VRAM. However, the RX 9060 XT isn’t just aimed at eSports titles. AMD addressed this in its press release. According to the release, the card is designed to handle the toughest workloads in the gaming industry. AMD has repeatedly suggested in press releases that the card will be used for 1440p gaming and deliver an ultra-smooth experience. Decide what it’s good for, AMD.
