When a veteran like John Romero raves about a game, you know it’s special—on Twitch’s FPS Fridays, Romero streamed Dusk and left no doubt that Szymanski’s boomer shooter earned the old-school seal of approval.
The new Twitch series FPS Fridays launched with John Romero himself playing Dusk (New Blood, 2018)—the indie shooter that helped ignite the modern boomer shooter movement. Put simply: Romero had an absolute blast with the game.
The DOOM creator quickly settled into Dusk’s secret-laden, twitchy pace. He claimed he wasn’t aiming for 100% completion, but his approach was anything but lazy. He singled out Szymanski’s sound design and Andrew Hulshult’s menacing soundtrack for praise, marveling at the game’s detailed, cheeky physical items—like tossing everything he found into the first map’s infamous trash toilet and dragging around the now-legendary joke soap for much of his play session.
At the end of the stream, Romero heaped praise on Dusk, saying it owed a lot to his own legacy. “The gameplay is top-notch, I love it. The atmosphere is killer, the design is clever, loaded with secrets and retro flair—if you haven’t picked up Dusk yet, you should!” He finished with: “New Blood, son, you did a good job. I approve of your vocation. You chose well.” The New Blood team—including Hulshult and Szymanski—shared the moment, with studio head Dave Oshry highlighting the soap bit, and New Blood’s official BlueSky replying with a hyped “THANKS DAD!”
Romero’s FPS Fridays series continues weekly, with viewers voting for the next title—he recently revisited DOOM’s infamous MyHouse WAD, which he first played back in 2023.
