TECH NEWS – Rob Bonta plans to take the U.S. president to court because he claims that the president only targeted Apple with the 25% tariffs.
Apple is scheduled to unveil the iPhone 17 in the fall. However, that unveiling could come with a potential price hike, as the company would have to absorb a 25% tariff if Trump follows through with his plan. Despite his insistence on bringing iPhone manufacturing into the local supply chain, he will face resistance. California Attorney General Rob Bonta has hinted that he will sue Trump for targeting Apple.
“The statement about Apple is obviously disappointing. It’s as if he wakes up one morning and says, ‘I think Apple should build more iPhones. I’ll tell their CEO to do that.’ Then maybe tomorrow he’ll wake up and say, ‘Hey, I was just kidding.’ We’re proud of California companies, and we want to make sure that their rights are not violated, especially by the president of the United States. That’s not something you’d normally have to worry about,” Bonta said.
Mark Gurman, editor of Bloomberg, said that iPhone production will never move to the US. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement that Trump is confident that iPhone production can be done locally because the US has the necessary resources. Bonta’s pro-Apple statements are interesting because he has always opposed big tech companies on privacy and anti-monopoly issues. Now, however, he is speaking out in favor of Apple.
He mentioned that companies like these make California the fourth largest economy in the world. He wants to ensure that it stays that way so these companies can continue making great products and providing jobs. He added that his office will examine the legal basis for any action stemming from Trump’s threat against Apple, deciding whether to target a single company or apply the action more broadly.
