Mission: Impossible Director Almost Gave Us a Superman Movie with Henry Cavill – Here’s What It Would Have Looked Like

MOVIE NEWS – The director of Mission: Impossible 8 wanted to bring Superman to the big screen with Henry Cavill, but we’ll never see it. At least we know how it would have started. Superman returns to theaters this July with a new actor in the cape.

Despite strong box office numbers for Cavill’s first two outings as Superman, Warner Bros. was hesitant to gamble on another film starring him after the Justice League fiasco. That doesn’t mean there weren’t efforts to bring him back. One of the most intriguing pitches came from Christopher McQuarrie, known for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and the excellent Edge of Tomorrow.

McQuarrie had worked with Cavill on Mission: Impossible – Fallout and was eager to team up again. He approached Warner Bros. with an idea he described as “really good.” He never shared many details – and maybe he never will – but he did tease what those first few minutes would have looked like if the project had happened:

“I’ll tell you the first five minutes of my Superman movie. Remember the opening of Pixar’s Up, the one that tells the character’s whole life without words? My first five minutes would have done exactly that for Superman – showing what drives him, what he fears, and why he makes the choices he does. It would have been epic, so epic. In five minutes, you’d see the movie’s scale was just incredible.” – McQuarrie (via Happy Sad Confused).

A Bright and Uplifting Superman

McQuarrie also explained that he wanted to create a Superman who would leave audiences feeling inspired and hopeful as they left the theater. Sadly, that film will never be made – unless some twist of fate at Warner Bros. brings it back. While reports in 2022 suggested Cavill might return to the role, those plans changed after Black Adam’s failure and James Gunn’s appointment as head of DC Studios. Interestingly, McQuarrie also had ideas for a Green Lantern project.

“Green Lantern is tricky, huh? His power is a real challenge, but I figured it out. It was great to see him learn how to use that power, and give him a weakness so he wasn’t totally invincible. The key to Green Lantern is that the ring has to be recharged, and that’s not a flaw – it’s a strength! It only works for a limited time, and it could run out when you least expect it. That solved the whole Green Lantern problem for me. The suit’s another issue, but that can be fixed.” – Christopher McQuarrie.

Instead, we’ll be getting Superman (2025) on July 11th, with David Corenswet playing the last son of Krypton. This film kicks off the DCU in earnest, with filming wrapped on the second major release: Supergirl. These are just the first steps of what’s hoped to be a long-running saga, as long as audiences keep showing up.
