iPhone 17: Will the Base Model Not Get 12 GB RAM and a Better Chipset?

TECH NEWS – According to one analyst, the basic iPhone 17 won’t receive much attention from Apple (perhaps as a way to encourage users to switch to more powerful devices).

Earlier, there were rumors that each iPhone 17 would have 12 GB of RAM if Apple could solve its supply chain issues. Unfortunately, this seems to be a hurdle the company can’t overcome. One analyst released details about the base iPhone 17 specs, saying they are disappointing. Additionally, this model will not have the A19 chipset; Apple will apparently stick with the A18 chipset found in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.

GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu’s research note mentioned the base iPhone 17’s specifications. On paper, the remaining three models in Apple’s flagship line will be significantly better. This version is expected to have 8 GB of RAM and the A18 chipset. This is a significant step back from the other models. Therefore, many may opt for the iPhone 17 Air, which will reportedly use the A19 chipset and be mass-produced using TSMC’s third-generation 3nm process with 12GB of RAM. Previous rumors had suggested the opposite, claiming that only the Pro models would have more RAM and a dual-chamber cooling system to control the A19 Pro’s heat.

Apple may be forced to cut costs on the A17 because it is incorporating an LTPO OLED panel into the device, which will support higher refresh rates. The iPhone 16 became the best-selling smartphone in the first three months of 2025, but Apple may make these trade-offs because an LTPO OLED panel is an expensive component. Given that the base iPhone 17 is likely to be mass-produced in the millions, the goal is clearly to reduce manufacturing costs.
