Despite winning many awards, Team Asobi’s masterpiece resurfaced at State of Play, even though it launched for the PlayStation 5 nine months ago.
While Ghost of Yotei was the game most expected to appear at the showcase (and it did, as we’ve covered in today’s news), Astro Bot certainly wasn’t on anyone’s radar. Team Asobi’s studio head Nicolas Doucet appeared during the stream to announce that the 2024 Game of the Year winner will get five new levels on July 10 at 6 p.m. CEST, and a new version of the limited-edition Astro Bot DualSense controller will be released later this year.
With this latest addition, the game now boasts more than 90 stages in total. Like most of the post-launch levels from Team Asobi, these new challenges are aimed at platformer veterans looking for tougher gameplay. The expansion is titled Vicious Void Galaxy, and there’s a surprise appearance as well: Atsu, the protagonist from Ghost of Yotei, will show up as a collectible bot.
As for the new controller version, it looks almost identical to the previous one, except for a minor tweak — the eyes on the DualSense touchpad are slightly different, giving the impression that Astro is smiling from inside the controller. Other color accents remain unchanged. Now that Astro Bot features over 90 levels and it’s been nearly a year since its release, this could be the final DLC drop, as Team Asobi is likely to shift focus to their next big project.
It wouldn’t be surprising if Doucet and his team are already planning a launch title for the PlayStation 6 — just as they did with Astro’s Playroom for the PS5.
