Originally known as Project Century, this new Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio project will take place across at least two eras, making it far more complex than first assumed. SEGA and the studio dropped a brand-new trailer at this year’s Summer Game Fest and officially revealed the game’s title: Stranger Than Heaven.
The latest video gives a first look at a 1943 setting, while the initial teaser from last December showed a scene set in 1915—so we can expect at least two distinct time periods in the story. The protagonist and gameplay elements appear to evolve from the Like a Dragon series, but much about the game remains a mystery. We may be waiting a while before we get the full picture of this promising project.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is now one of the industry’s busiest developers, churning out major releases one after another. Earlier this year, they dropped Like a Dragon Gaiden: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii—a Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth spinoff starring fan favorite Majima Goro. Since SEGA has already stated that Like a Dragon is one of its flagship franchises, Stranger Than Heaven may only differ in name from its predecessors, as the mainline games have switched to turn-based combat.
Stranger Than Heaven doesn’t have a release date or confirmed platforms yet. Could this be a next-gen exclusive? We’re bound to hear more soon.
