Nintendo Switch 2: The First Official Sales Numbers Are In, But How Big Is the Launch?

Nintendo has released the first sales figures for the new Switch 2, and they’re nothing short of record-breaking. Over 3.5 million units sold worldwide in just four days—but the country-by-country results are just as intriguing. In the UK, the Switch 2 set a new Nintendo record, though PlayStation 5, PS4, and Xbox Series still beat it overall. So is this really the biggest console debut ever?

Just four days after the June 5 launch, Nintendo announced that it had sold more than 3.5 million Switch 2 units worldwide. This marks the company’s strongest international debut for any console to date, though Nintendo was quick to stress that success is measured over the long haul, not just through short-term records.

According to NielsenIQ, the Switch 2 scored the biggest launch week ever for a Nintendo device in the UK. However, three other consoles (PS5, PS4, Xbox Series) still had even bigger launches in the region. The Game Business reports that the Switch 2 outsold the original Switch’s UK launch week by a ratio of over 2:1, with the 2017 Switch launch coming in just over 80,000 units. The previous best for a Nintendo device was the 3DS, which sold 113,000 in its UK debut.

The top 10 UK console launches, according to The Game Business, now read: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo Switch, Xbox 360, and Xbox One X. The PS5 reportedly sold more than 250,000 units in its first two days in the UK and over 450,000 by the end of 2020. Until we get precise Switch 2 numbers, the best estimate is somewhere between 113,000 and 250,000 sold in the UK during launch week.

There’s no question this is an extremely strong start for Nintendo, and Switch 2 could be setting new records elsewhere too. In France, for example, it could become the fastest-selling console ever with 200,000 units reportedly sold in its opening weekend.
