MOVIE NEWS – Amazon MGM Studios is reportedly searching for a new star for its live-action God of War adaptation after Ryan Hurst suffered a serious injury during production. The studio may now turn to the actor fans have repeatedly suggested for Kratos since the early 2000s.
Fan casting for video game adaptations became practically its own genre across message boards, blogs, and early gaming websites during the 2000s. Kurt Russell was frequently proposed as Solid Snake, Dave Bautista was linked to Marcus Fenix, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was imagined as Dom Santiago, and Ian Somerhalder was occasionally chosen for Ezio. One idea proved far more persistent than most: Bautista’s name continued to appear whenever fans discussed who should play Kratos. Most of those old posts have vanished over the years, but the actor best known to many viewers as Drax may now be closer than ever to portraying the Ghost of Sparta.
Amazon MGM Studios’ God of War series has been in development for quite some time, and the production has already released its first official image, which drew considerable criticism from fans. Ryan Hurst was originally selected to play Kratos, an intriguing choice because he previously voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök. Hurst suffered a serious injury several weeks ago, however, and the studio now appears to be pursuing a more drastic solution than simply delaying the shoot.
Deadline reports that Dave Bautista is in talks with Amazon MGM Studios to take over the lead role. His involvement has not been officially confirmed, but the company has reportedly approached the 57-year-old actor, who recently concluded his twelve-year run in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Bautista’s professional wrestling background, imposing physical presence, and extensive action experience have made him an obvious fan choice for Kratos for decades, while his more recent dramatic performances have demonstrated that he can deliver considerably more than physical intimidation.
Approaching 60 Has Not Pulled Him Away From Action Roles
Ryan Hurst is seven years younger than Bautista, but Amazon may consider the older actor better prepared for the production’s considerable physical demands. Bautista has earned increasing recognition for dramatic work in recent years, yet he has not walked away from action movies and will next play Victor the Kurgan opposite Henry Cavill in the new Highlander film. He had to regain muscle for that role despite saying in 2024 that he wanted to move beyond characters defined almost entirely by their size and strength. “I’m not the big, muscular guy I used to be anymore,” he admitted at the time.
Kratos would not necessarily represent another one-dimensional powerhouse, especially after the more recent God of War games transformed the character into a weary, emotionally burdened father struggling with his violent past. Bautista’s dramatic experience could therefore matter just as much as his physical presence. A potential recasting would also attract intense attention because Hurst’s appearance as Kratos had already generated considerable debate after the series’ first official images were released.
The adaptation, written and overseen by Ronald D. Moore, received an initial two-season order from Amazon, with both seasons expected to be filmed back-to-back. Rumors suggest the studio could eventually replace Callum Vinson, the young actor playing Atreus, during the second or third season so that the character’s transition into an older version feels more natural, although Amazon has not confirmed that possibility. Bautista’s deal is likewise not complete, but Hurst’s departure now appears all but unavoidable based on Deadline’s reporting.
Hurst reportedly tore his biceps while filming an action sequence in late June, and the injury required surgery. A demanding two-season production would place considerable physical strain on its leading actor, meaning Amazon may be unwilling to wait several months for a full recovery before restarting work. Whether Bautista ultimately accepts the role or not, the studio appears to need a new Ghost of Sparta.
