This might be a first: one studio releasing three major titles in a single year—two of them RPGs.
2025 is shaping up to be an extraordinarily productive year for Obsidian Entertainment. The developer kicked things off in February with the release of Avowed, a first-person fantasy RPG that received solid critical reception. Following that comes Grounded 2, a sequel to the family-friendly survival game. And in October, Obsidian is returning to its satirical space-faring universe with The Outer Worlds 2, which, as reported yesterday, will come with a higher price point.
It would be understandable to worry that releasing multiple games so close together could lead to sales cannibalization. But Brandon Adler, director of The Outer Worlds 2, isn’t concerned. Speaking to PCGamer at the Summer Game Fest, he shared that although the schedule—likely shaped by the delay of Avowed from November 2024 to February 2025—initially caused some internal discussion, it ultimately proved advantageous.
“Yeah, we talked about this. Two big RPGs in the same year. What does that mean for us? What does that mean for how people are going to view us? We found out a few months before everyone else did when the games were actually going to launch. I think it was a good use of time because it added a lot of polish to Avowed. The more, the merrier. This is the year of Obsidian Entertainment. I don’t remember any other studio that has released three titles like ours, and that’s something we can be proud of. Funny enough, there was a line I wrote for the developer direct that didn’t make the cut about Grand Theft Auto VI. They’re a behemoth; that would be a big deal. But we’re also a different audience, right? It’s not exactly a crossover. Would we have adjusted? Who knows?” Adler said.
The Outer Worlds 2 is set to release on October 29 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
