This feels like Gearbox and Take-Two‘s revenge for not being allowed to raise the game’s launch price — and it’s painfully obvious.
Randy Pitchford recently confirmed that it will take quite a while before Borderlands 4 receives a deep discount or joins services like Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus. The Gearbox CEO made the statement in response to Borderlands 3 being featured in the 2025 Steam Summer Sale at a staggering 95% discount.
He pointed out that it took five full years for Borderlands 3 to reach that point and become available through subscription platforms, urging gamers to seize the opportunity. Regarding expectations for the future, Pitchford added that it will take even longer for Borderlands 4 to follow the same path.
While he later clarified that he doesn’t control pricing or sales decisions, and that the timeline isn’t necessarily up to him, he stood by his prediction. Whether or not it turns out to be accurate remains to be seen.
Sales like this and Borderlands 3 showing up on console subscription programs took over 5 years from the game’s launch to happen. Take advantage when it’s here! And to set expectations, it will be even longer before this kind of thing happens in the next cycle with Borderlands 4. https://t.co/5Jg9j2ILza

But the long delay in reaching discount territory isn’t the only thing separating Borderlands 4 from its predecessor. According to producer Chris Brock, this new entry is much more of a true evolution of the franchise than Borderlands 3 ever was. That game was intentionally made to feel familiar since it launched after a seven-year gap between mainline installments.
In Borderlands 4, traversal mechanics and exploration will be key differentiators from earlier titles in the series. Still, if the game flops, lowering its price may be the only way to boost sales. That outcome remains speculative, but it’s not out of the question. Borderlands 4 launches September 12 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version expected later in 2025.
