TECH NEWS – As Apple continues working on its own AI systems, the company is now seriously considering external help to improve Siri and finally bring the assistant into the modern LLM era.
Siri has long been criticized for its limitations: it struggles with natural language understanding, fails at handling multi-step conversations, and falls far behind its rivals like ChatGPT and Claude. While Apple Intelligence promised a smarter and more personalized assistant, Siri’s current version still doesn’t deliver what users expect from a modern AI-driven tool.
The assistant’s biggest weakness lies in its rigid command-based structure, making it ill-suited to interpret different phrasings. Complex or open-ended questions, or those requiring reasoning, remain out of its reach — precisely where new-generation LLMs excel.
Apple Eyes External AI Integration
According to Bloomberg and WCCFTech, Apple is exploring partnerships with both OpenAI (behind ChatGPT) and Anthropic (creator of Claude) to enhance Siri’s capabilities. Both companies’ language models are reportedly compatible with Apple’s Private Cloud Compute setup, which meets the company’s stringent privacy standards.
Internal testing suggests that Anthropic’s models are the better fit for Siri’s needs. Although no final decision has been made yet, financial negotiations are reportedly underway. Anthropic is said to be demanding a multibillion-dollar deal, which may prompt Apple to explore other partnerships as well.
Delays and User Frustration
Siri’s slow progress has already drawn public backlash, especially after Apple announced in March that Apple Intelligence-powered Siri features might not arrive before 2026. The reaction was swift and negative, with many accusing Apple of once again lagging behind.
Now, the company is racing to deliver the new Siri experience with iOS 26. If successful, it could restore user trust and reposition Apple in the competitive AI assistant market.
A successful deal could mark one of the most dramatic evolutions in Siri’s history — finally turning it from a glorified voice menu into a truly intelligent assistant.
