Despite the Enthusiastic Reception, Blades of Fire Flopped at the Box Office!

One of Spain’s most promising games of the year has failed to deliver on its hype, “despite positive reviews from both players and the media.” Sales of Blades of Fire have fallen far short of its publisher’s expectations.

Very few Spanish studios carry as much tradition and prestige as Mercury Steam. After making their mark on major franchises like Metroid and Castlevania, the team tried something bolder this year: their own IP, an action RPG titled Blades of Fire. Their aim? To inject fresh life into the decade-old third-person Soulslike formula.

The game was published by 505 Games, but the parent company, Italy’s Digital Bros, just dropped disappointing news. In their latest financial report closing out the fiscal year, Digital Bros revealed that the past twelve months were “worse than the 23-24 period due to the poor performance of the new title Blades of Fire.”

“The group’s new video game, Blades of Fire, released on May 22, 2025 for consoles and as a PC exclusive on the Epic Games Store, fell short of expectations—even though both the gaming press and players gave it generally positive reviews. This just confirms how tough it is for new games to attract an audience, especially without the backing of an established brand with a built-in community of loyal fans,” the company said in a statement.

According to Digital Bros, Blades of Fire’s initial Epic Games Store exclusivity on PC may have offered an upfront payday from Tim Sweeney’s team, but didn’t result in notable sales—at least not so far. As for how it’s doing on consoles, the numbers remain a mystery. Only time will tell if a future Steam release could breathe new life into the project.
