MOVIE NEWS – After years of radio silence and dashed hopes, Amazon’s God of War adaptation is finally showing real signs of life. The show was announced long before Prime Video shattered the video game adaptation curse with Fallout, and after that series’ smash success, fans were hungry for Kratos’ long-awaited live-action debut. Now, after endless stagnation, showrunner Ronald D. Moore has delivered the news at San Diego Comic-Con that the project is finally moving forward, and his promise is clear: the series will honor the spirit and emotional depth of Santa Monica Studio’s games, especially the recent chapters. For the first time in years, fans can genuinely look forward to this ambitious adaptation.
Things finally appear to be moving forward on Amazon’s long-awaited God of War TV adaptation. The series was announced before Prime Video helped to break the video game curse with its Fallout series. Following the tremendous success of Fallout’s debut season, God of War fans immediately became excited about Kratos’ long-overdue live-action adaptation. But the project has been stagnant since the announcement. However, that is all about to change, as Amazon’s God of War series has finally received a positive update from showrunner Ronald D. Moore, and it will make fans of Santa Monica Studios’ games very, very excited.
Ronald D. Moore spoke with IGN at San Diego Comic-Con to discuss his career and the upcoming God of War adaptation at Amazon. As is the case with any video game adaptation, especially given the major examples from the past few years, fans get very worried that the adaptation will make major changes to the source material. But, Moore is putting fans’ minds at ease as he promises the adaptation will be faithful to the tone of the games, especially the recent entries. He said:
“The tone of the show is trying to emulate the tone of the game, which is there’s this epic journey, this heartfelt story of these two men setting out on this thing to honor the memory of his wife, Atreus’ mother. So it has this emotional heart, but there’s this sense of history of who Kratos is, this mystery about his past, what he represents, the emotions that he’s going through. So there’s a weight to it, but not so much weight that there’s not enjoyment along the way and there’s spectacle and there’s lots of things going on in this world.”
The first God of War game was released in 2005 and was a big hit among fans. However, it’s the fourth and fifth games, titled God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarok (2022), that gained widespread acclaim, both for the gameplay and the emotional overarching story. It’s that story that drew Ronald D. Moore to the series. “I kept coming back to this story of father and son, and it was just emotional and it was different,” he said. “I hadn’t seen anything like that before, and I had no expectations because, like you said, I’m not a gamer.”
Ronald D. Moore Hasn’t Actually Played the Games
As excited as God of War fans are about Kratos and Atreus’ story being brought to life in live-action, there is one large shadow of doubt looming over the series: Ronald D. Moore hasn’t played the video games. “I’ve tried to play it. But it’s just a different thing,” Moore said.
But, even though he can’t physically play the games, he’s still experienced Kratos’ entire journey thanks to Let’s Play videos and cutscenes. “I started looking at the cutscenes together, and there’s so much material there, and I really responded to the characters,” Moore assured fans.
