Has the French publisher lost its mind by threatening one of the actors playing a character? This only confirms that the rumors are true.
At the end of June, countless rumors were already circulating about the remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Matt Ryan, the actor who plays Edward Kenway, practically confirmed that the remake exists and will be released soon. Ubisoft found out, and, according to Ryan, they were not happy about his apparent slip-up. They threatened him with legal action. At a recent event where he signed a box of Edward Kenway figures, Ryan responded to a fan and admitted to the legal threat.
In a video first shared on TikTok and then on Twitter, a fan asks Ryan questions about his comments and the upcoming remaster. Ryan first shrugs and replies, “I don’t know. Well, the thing is, when that happened, someone was filming me, and I was being very open and honest. But I didn’t know they were actually recording me on their phone. Then, the company threatened to sue me. So now I say nothing.”
Unfortunately, as he explained, he didn’t know he was being filmed. One could argue that he shouldn’t have said anything if he didn’t want to get into trouble with Ubisoft. However, one could also argue that the French publisher is a little too litigious. Last June, Ubisoft’s co-founder and CEO confirmed that remakes of the Assassin’s Creed games were in the works. Anyone familiar with the franchise knows that Ubisoft and its decision-makers would be foolish not to be working on a Black Flag remake.
It seems that Ubisoft’s lawyers are wasting their time by issuing a legal threat. Surely they have better things to do. Perhaps a simple message from someone on the Ubisoft team who works directly with Ryan, asking him not to talk about or refer to the remake, would have sufficed. The company is going a bit overboard.
Damn so it seems like Matt Ryan (voice actor for Edward Kenway) got into deep trouble with Ubisoft for hinting at the Black Flag Remake to that other guy..
