Apple plans to unveil the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air in September. According to recently leaked information, the device’s internal battery is only 2.49 mm thick, half the size of the iPhone 17 Pro’s battery. A leaker shared an image comparing the batteries, which is likely in line with previous rumors that the company will use a battery with a capacity of less than 3,000 mAh.

This information comes from a Naver blog post by eyes1122, who had previously suggested that the iPhone 17 Air would have a 2,800-mAh battery. Later leaks noted that the battery capacity would be just under 3,000 mAh. Comparative images clearly illustrate the dramatic difference in thickness between the two iPhones, as well as Apple’s commitment to an ultra-thin design.

While the lower battery size and capacity are concerning, the extremely thin design demonstrates Apple’s engineering prowess. At just 2.49 mm thick, Apple appears to be pushing the boundaries of battery design by leveraging advancements such as silicon-anode, high-density cells that supply chain analysts have speculated about. Additionally, we have heard that the iPhone 17 Air will have a frame thickness of 5.5 mm, just over twice the size of the battery. Reducing its size clearly plays a central role in keeping the device’s depth to a minimum.

Although the thinner design offers more options and novelty compared to other models, there are certain drawbacks that need to be considered. According to internal tests, the iPhone 17 Air provides about 60-70% of users with a full day of battery life on a single charge. Apple is aware of this issue. Therefore, Apple may design an optional battery case accessory to compensate for this shortcoming for users who need longer battery life. This design choice is a bold risk for Apple because the device will not appeal to power users but rather to those who prioritize the device’s appearance.

In addition to the battery case, the iPhone 17 Air relies on the efficiency of the A19 chip and customized modem to significantly extend battery life.
