Does Bob Odenkirk Still Have It? – How ‘Nobody 2’ Is Faring With Critics

MOVIE NEWS – Early buzz this week suggested Bob Odenkirk hasn’t lost his edge as an action hero, but now that critics have weighed in, the question is whether the sequel truly stands as a worthy follow-up. Based on its Rotten Tomatoes debut, the answer depends on who you ask.

Launching with a solid 81% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, Nobody 2 has been hailed by some as “an action-packed, gory and wickedly funny dark comedy,” while others dismiss it as “the rushed Wikipedia plot summary of a more complete movie.” Most feedback leans positive, with critic David Poland noting:

“This is exactly the kind of silly summer movie I prefer seeing with an audience that laughs, gasps, and collectively rolls its eyes. If you enjoy this type of film, there’s no ruining it. It’s simply a string of set pieces with straightforward characters.”

Is There Life for Odenkirk’s Hero Beyond ‘Nobody 2’?

Alongside Odenkirk, Nobody 2 brings back Connie Nielsen, RZA, Colin Salmon, and Christopher Lloyd, while adding John Ortiz, Colin Hanks, and Sharon Stone to the mix. This time, Hutch Mansell takes his family on a much-needed getaway to the quaint tourist town of Plummerville—only to land in the crosshairs of a crooked theme park owner, a shady sheriff, and a ruthless crime boss.

“Odenkirk as an aging action hero remains a violent delight, but the storytelling in this sequel leaves plenty to be desired,” writes Amon Warmann of Empire Magazine. The film’s rating is just three points shy of the first movie’s 84% Certified Fresh score from 2021. Critic Jason Miller calls it “National Lampoon’s Vacation meets John Wick,” while Alonso Duralde of The Film Verdict adds:

“Stripped of the twists and surprises that made the first film a sleeper hit, this sequel still delivers breezy, bone-crunching entertainment for undemanding late-summer audiences.”

Fans can take heart: the franchise likely won’t end here. While no official announcements have been made, Odenkirk hinted at SDCC last month that he believes “there could be four” films in total. That, of course, depends on the box office. Projections have Nobody 2 earning $10–12 million on opening weekend—double the original’s debut haul from four years ago—making for a promising start.
