Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick believes Rockstar Games’ next big release will not face another postponement.
In a recent interview with CNBC — which we cannot embed due to restrictive geoblocking — Zelnick expressed strong confidence in the current release date of Grand Theft Auto VI. He acknowledged Rockstar has multiple other projects in the pipeline, but emphasized that launching the game in May remains the top priority.
Before GTA VI was delayed from 2025 to late spring of next year, Zelnick had repeatedly made public statements expressing his belief that Rockstar would hit its 2025 release window. At that stage, however, there was no exact date — only a vague “fall 2025” target — allowing Rockstar more leeway in setting the precise launch. Given how monumental this release is, one would assume Rockstar and Take-Two wouldn’t commit to specifics unless they were certain they could deliver.
Yet Zelnick’s unwavering assertions that GTA VI wouldn’t miss its 2025 target make such confidence harder to take at face value. It’s been over a decade since Grand Theft Auto V debuted, and while Rockstar has kept supporting it, the studio has been fully focused on GTA VI since 2020. Zelnick has previously said that pushing the launch to 2026 was important to give Rockstar the opportunity to strive for perfection with this title.
Even so, in his CNBC remarks, Zelnick was careful not to overhype expectations: “We try not to pump up expectations. Rockstar’s whole stock and trade is to have these extraordinary expectations and still beat them. I know that’s their goal. I know it’s going to be an amazing game.”
Time will tell. The game is set to launch on May 26 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
