HANDHELD NEWS – The AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 Strix Halo. This is the secret weapon of GPD’s handheld PC, delivering excellent performance—though not at a budget price.
The GPD Win 5 APU operates within a 55–75 W TDP range, featuring 16 Zen 5 cores and the fastest integrated GPU available: the Radeon 8060S. This iGPU includes 40 compute units (CUs) built on RDNA 3.5 technology, making it far more advanced than the hardware in competing handheld PCs, which rely on either Strix Point or custom Ryzen Z2 Extreme APUs. According to GPD, the Win 5 is the only handheld PC capable of supporting up to 128 GB of LPDDR5X 8000 MT/s memory and up to 4 TB of SSD storage. It is also available in 32 GB and 64 GB memory configurations with 1 or 2 TB storage options. A microSD card slot and a mini SSD slot are also included.
The 7-inch (17.78 cm) display features a resolution of 1920×1080 and supports refresh rates of up to 120 Hz. It comes with AMD FreeSync Premium technology to eliminate screen tearing and delivers 100% sRGB color coverage. Despite its powerful hardware, the device is smaller than most handheld PCs, including the Steam Deck, measuring just 267 mm. The GPD Win 5 includes a removable 80Wh battery, weighing 565 g without it and 915 g with it. It is the only handheld PC to use a 180W AI PC power adapter, offering an alternative way of powering the device but requiring an outlet for sustained operation.
The handheld features a modern control system with capacitive analog sticks optimized for eSports FPS titles, along with Zero Dead Zone and Zero Drift technologies for durability. Hall effect technology is used in the triggers, enabling hair-trigger mode with 0.1 mm precision and a 0.1 ms response time. Wireless connectivity includes WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, while wired connections are provided by two Type-C ports (one USB 3.2 Gen 2 and one USB 4.0) and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
The GPD Win 5 is said to outperform many high-end desktop CPUs while operating at a lower TDP, even surpassing laptops equipped with Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 chips in synthetic benchmarks. GPD has stated that the device will be priced below the Asus ROG Z13 Flow 2025 (USD 2,300), meaning the Win 5 will likely cost under USD 2,000.
