Max Payne Is Still on the Way: Remedy Hasn’t Given Up on It!

The noir hero who downs painkillers by the handful is still in development, meaning fans will have to wait a little longer.

Rockstar Games and Remedy Entertainment have confirmed that the long-awaited remakes are still in production. Back in April 2022, over three years ago, Rockstar announced that the first two Max Payne titles would receive full remakes. Fittingly, the project is being handled by Remedy itself, the original team behind these iconic games.

Released in 2001, the first Max Payne quickly won over fans with its noir-inspired storytelling, comic book-style visuals, and adrenaline-fueled action. It also introduced a trend that remains influential today: the bullet time mechanic, inspired by John Woo’s films. This allowed players to slow time, leap dramatically through the air, and gun down enemies in cinematic fashion. In 2003 came Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, followed in 2012 by Max Payne 3, though the latter was developed by Rockstar, not the Finnish team.

Since that announcement, however, more than three years have passed, and silence has surrounded the remakes. Some fans feared the Max Payne 1+2 Remake had fallen into dreaded development hell. Fortunately, recent updates are encouraging: in its latest investor report, Remedy confirmed that work with Rockstar is ongoing and productive.

“The Max Payne 1 + 2 remake project continues to progress and remains in full production. In the second quarter, the team built on the steady momentum from earlier in the year. Collaboration with Rockstar Games remains close and productive, ensuring alignment as the project advances toward its next major phase,” said Remedy.

So, for now, patience is the only option.
