MOVIE NEWS – Orlando Bloom, best known for bringing the agile elf Legolas to life in The Lord of the Rings saga, has admitted he’s open to stepping back into Middle-earth in the upcoming prequel/sequel spin-off The Hunt for Gollum. Scheduled for release in December 2027, the new chapter will be directed by Andy Serkis, the motion-capture icon who embodied Gollum in the original trilogy—and he’ll once again reprise the role.
While details remain scarce, one thing is certain: Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens are attached to the project. This creative trio was behind the Academy Award-winning trilogy, ensuring that The Hunt for Gollum will carry much of the DNA that made the originals such massive hits.
As reported by People, Bloom was on the promotional circuit for his new sports drama The Cut when the inevitable question came up. Could he return as Legolas? “It’s such an incredible role,” Bloom reflected, recalling his days as the elf archer. However, he admitted no official offer has come his way: “I’m so thankful to have been part of those films. But I haven’t heard a thing.”
Even so, the Pirates of the Caribbean star isn’t closing the door. In fact, he laughed about how modern technology could make him look younger if needed: “With AI, anything’s possible these days! I didn’t use that in The Cut, by the way.” He added with a smile, “Honestly, I can’t picture anyone else playing Legolas. What are they going to do, cast someone else in the role?”
What We Know So Far About The Hunt for Gollum
Although Bloom hasn’t signed on, there’s still plenty of mystery surrounding the cast. Andy Serkis will not only direct but return as Gollum, and recently Sir Ian McKellen dropped some intriguing hints during the For the Love of Fantasy convention in London. “I hear there’s going to be another film set in Middle-earth,” McKellen said. “It’s going to start shooting in May. Gollum is directing, it’s all about Gollum. But here’s the secret—there’s a character named Frodo and another named Gandalf.”
McKellen didn’t confirm whether he or Elijah Wood would reprise their roles, but his comments were enough to ignite speculation. Could the original cast reunite? Fans like Bloom certainly think it would be the only fitting option to carry the legacy of these timeless characters forward.
