More than The Last of Us? Naughty Dog’s new title, Intergalactic, is moving “full steam ahead,” with even film talks underway. Neil Druckmann confirms it is the playable evolution of The Last of Us Part 2, setting itself up as the studio’s longest and most ambitious game yet. Druckmann has revealed a wealth of details about the project.
Gamers still remember Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Naughty Dog’s upcoming title unveiled during last year’s Game Awards. This science fiction epic is still years away from release, so any confirmed news from its director feels significant. Neil Druckmann has now shared fresh details about a project he holds in high regard. Settle in, because there’s plenty to unpack.
Intergalactic Becomes Naughty Dog’s Most Ambitious Project
In a recent interview with Variety, Druckmann revealed that the studio is “running full steam ahead” with Intergalactic, a sci-fi adventure set in an alternate future and centered on bounty hunter Jordan A. Mun, portrayed by actress Tati Gabrielle. According to the director, this is “the most ambitious game” in Naughty Dog’s history, and potentially its most expensive once finished.
That’s why he has stepped back from his daily involvement with The Last of Us Season 3 to focus on this project. While still unreleased and confirmed as a PS5 exclusive, Druckmann insists Intergalactic will go further than its predecessors. Whereas The Last of Us integrated RPG elements and semi-open areas, this game will deliver greater freedom and player choice, positioning itself as a playable evolution of The Last of Us Part 2.
The development team is “working at full speed” and already discussing the cast. Tati Gabrielle’s Jordan is described as “iconic, complex, and compelling in the Naughty Dog tradition.” Joining her will be Tony Dalton and Troy Baker, the latter known for voicing Joel. Sony, for its part, is promoting the title as “the next big leap” for the studio, suggesting multiple projects could branch from the franchise. The teaser shown so far “doesn’t scratch the surface.”
Though it’s too early for sequel talk, Druckmann has left the door open for future installments if Intergalactic succeeds. Naughty Dog is also quietly developing another secret title. Meanwhile, conversations with Hollywood studios about an Intergalactic movie have already taken place, though Druckmann emphasizes the game will come first: “a fantastic video game” before all else.
Story-wise, Intergalactic is set thousands of years in an alternate future, unfolding on Sempiria, a planet with its own rules, history, and conflicts. Bounty hunter Jordan is stranded there during a mission and begins to uncover mysteries tied to politics and religion. Naughty Dog has been building the lore alongside gameplay prototypes, with Druckmann stressing that mission design and player freedom dictate how stories are told and experienced.
