A JRPG Legend Returns – Square Enix Reveals Dragon Quest VII Reimagined!

One of the greatest JRPGs is back. Square Enix has surprised fans with the reveal and trailer of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined. Setting aside its streak of 2D HD remakes, the Japanese giant is reviving another classic adventure.

Square Enix has been steadily reviving its beloved JRPGs in recent years, many of which have been reimagined with the acclaimed HD 2D pixel-art style—such as the brilliant Dragon Quest III Remake HD-2D and its upcoming sequel. This is why the announcement of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, complete with a release date of February 5, 2026, has been such a pleasant surprise. It will launch on Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series.

As the title suggests, this is a new take on the classic RPG that first appeared on the original PlayStation back in 2000 and was later remade for 3DS in 2013. But this time, the revamp goes beyond visuals, reshaping the very world itself. Yoshiaki Koizumi, director of Super Mario Odyssey, stressed the ambition by calling it a “redesigned world.”

The reveal trailer already provided striking hints. The visual overhaul moves away from the cel-shaded aesthetic that defined the series since Dragon Quest VIII, which helped highlight Akira Toriyama’s iconic designs. Instead, the style now feels closer to Dragon Quest Builders, but with a charming diorama-like look. Monsters will also roam visibly on the map, giving players the chance to dodge encounters rather than being forced into random battles. While combat mechanics remain under wraps, Square Enix teases “updated and improved” systems that preserve the classic core.

Another notable addition is a streamlined story, alongside the ability to equip up to two vocations at once, offering new strategic options in both exploration and combat. Taken together, it’s an exciting prospect for fans of traditional JRPGs, who have been delighted by the revival of ’90s-style classics for years now.
