A Fan Has Created a Portable PlayStation 5! [VIDEO]

Portable but not handheld: a creative modder has managed to turn Sony’s 2020 console into a compact, lightweight DIY version. A new YouTube video showcases the impressive process step by step.

Over the years, several attempts have been made to transform the PlayStation 5 into a portable system, but few look as polished as the latest one. The project, documented in a YouTube video embedded below, was created by Tera, a modder well known for building remarkable DIY consoles. This marks his second attempt at creating a portable PS5.

In the video, Tera highlights the improvements made since his earlier effort: disassembly of the console, modifications to the cooling system, reasons behind choosing a new case and LCD panel, and the final assembly process. The result is remarkable: thanks to the upgraded cooling solution, the console runs quietly even during gameplay, remains compact in size, and is significantly lighter than both the previous version and Sony’s standard PlayStation 5, boosting its portability factor.

Although Sony will likely never release an official portable PlayStation 5, the company has rolled out several variations of the system: the Standard Edition with Blu-ray, the Digital Edition without it, the 2023 redesign featuring a detachable optical drive, and last year’s PlayStation 5 Pro. The Pro edition delivers higher performance and includes PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution upscaling support, with a new iteration of the technology coming next year.

According to rumors, the next PlayStation generation may include a handheld capable of running both PlayStation 5 and 4 games. This would mark Sony’s return to handheld gaming after the PlayStation Vita, an important step as Microsoft may also be working with third-party manufacturers (such as Asus) on additional Xbox handhelds, similar to the Asus ROG Xbox Ally.
