Sony isn’t slowing down: not only has the company updated the base PS5 model (which it refuses to call “Slim,” despite being smaller than the 2020 version), but it could also release a mid-generation refresh and a brand-new controller before the year ends.
Rumors suggest that the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro will launch alongside a new DualSense controller featuring a long-requested feature. Polish outlet PPE — which accurately predicted the arrival of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on PS5 before its official announcement — reports that the redesigned PS5 Pro will be about 3% more energy-efficient than the current version. This aligns with insider billbil-kun’s recent information about the more powerful PlayStation 5 model.
According to PPE, the revamped PS5 Pro won’t be the only new hardware launching this year. A new DualSense (V3) controller is also rumored to arrive in November, replacing all previous versions and introducing a replaceable battery. This is a major upgrade, as it will allow players to swap out the battery if it fails, greatly extending the controller’s lifespan. Reportedly, this new controller will also come bundled with the updated PS5 Pro.
Although PPE has been a reliable source in the past, it’s worth treating these details with caution until they’re officially confirmed — just as with the recently released PS5 base model in Europe, which quietly downgraded storage from 1 TB to 825 GB without a price drop. (A classic case of “shrinkflation.”)
Hopefully, it won’t be long before these new devices hit store shelves and we learn how they improve upon the current hardware. It’s only a matter of time.
