Microsoft has upset Xbox users after changing its popular Rewards program, making it harder to redeem points for Game Pass and altering how rewards are earned.

It hasn’t been a great time for Xbox fans, especially those who had been saving Microsoft Rewards points for digital perks. For those unfamiliar, Microsoft Rewards is a free loyalty program that grants points for using the company’s services — whether browsing with Edge or playing games on Xbox. Many players relied on it to cover Game Pass renewals or fund major purchases without spending money. But now, the system has changed — and not in their favor.

On September 19, Microsoft’s official Rewards account advised users to “hold on to your points” because a gift card sale was coming in October. While that initially seemed like good news, many users were blindsided by a major change behind the scenes: the Rewards program was quietly overhauled following the recent Game Pass price increases and other adjustments. In short, the once-simple and cheap method of paying for Game Pass with points has become significantly more complicated.

Since October 1, the option to directly redeem points for Game Pass subscription time has disappeared from the Rewards catalog. Now, users must first convert points into Xbox gift cards and use those to pay for Game Pass. The system still works, but the exchange rate is worse, and the gift card balance now expires after 90 days if unused. While the promised October gift card sale is real, details remain unclear.

Adding fuel to the fire, Microsoft has also changed how users earn points to align with the new Game Pass plans. Depending on whether you’re subscribed to Essential, Premium, or Ultimate, you’ll now earn more or fewer points for gameplay and purchases — with bonuses favoring higher tiers and reduced returns for lower ones. This has sparked backlash, as many users feel they were encouraged to save up while the actual value of their points diminished.
