MOVIE NEWS – Filmmaking is a stressful process, especially when challenges emerge from day one — as director Edgar Wright, who helmed the upcoming adaptation of The Running Man, can confirm.
The British cult filmmaker (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) adapted Stephen King’s novel and stayed more faithful to the source than the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger version. However, he introduced a major change at the end. Wright feared that the notoriously critical King might hate it. “Honestly, waiting for his response was the most nerve-wracking moment of the entire production,” he recalled.
“We knew King was aware the ending would differ from his book,” Wright told Collider. “Then his reply came: ‘I was very curious to see how you’d handle the ending — and I think you did a fantastic job.’ I was overjoyed.”
The story takes place in a near-future society where entertainment reaches its darkest extreme: a live TV show in which contestants are hunted down and killed for sport. Wright’s version restores the satirical edge of King’s vision while still delivering breathtaking action sequences.
