The Godfather and Annie Hall Star Diane Keaton Passes Away at 79

MOVIE NEWS – Hollywood mourns the passing of Diane Keaton, the Oscar-winning icon whose distinctive charm and wit defined American cinema for more than five decades. She was 79, and her family has not released details regarding the cause of death. Her remarkable career left an indelible mark on generations of movie lovers worldwide.

Diane Keaton, the acclaimed actress best known for her unforgettable performances in Annie Hall and The Godfather, has passed away at the age of 79 in her California home. Her family has yet to disclose further information about her passing.

Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles in 1946, she took her mother’s maiden name early in her career. She began on stage, making her Broadway breakthrough with Play It Again, Sam, before moving into film. Her debut came in 1970 with Lovers and Other Strangers, followed by her defining role as Kay Adams in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather two years later — a role she would reprise in both sequels.

In a 2023 Instagram AMA, Keaton humorously asked Coppola why he ever cast her in the film, given her limited film experience at the time. Coppola replied: “I chose you because even though you were meant to play the quiet, straight wife, there was something deeper, funnier, and more captivating about you — and I was right.”

Keaton’s career soared with Woody Allen’s Annie Hall, which earned her the 1977 Academy Award for Best Actress. She continued collaborating with Allen on films such as Manhattan (1979), Radio Days (1987), and Hollywood Mavericks (1990). In the 1990s and 2000s, she established herself as a versatile actress through roles in Father of the Bride, The First Wives Club, Marvin’s Room, and Something’s Gotta Give.

Diane Keaton’s Legacy Continued Into Her Later Years

Even in her later years, Keaton remained active, starring in The Family Stone, Finding Dory, Book Club, and HBO’s The Young Pope in 2016. She also made a surprise appearance in Justin Bieber’s 2021 music video for Ghost. Her final credits included Book Club 2, Maybe I Do (2023), Arthur’s Whisky, and Summer Camp (2024).

Keaton also directed several projects, including her 1987 documentary Heaven, an episode of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, and several Belinda Carlisle music videos. Outside of film, she was also known for her work as a writer, singer, and photographer, cementing her status as one of Hollywood’s most multifaceted talents.
