MOVIE NEWS – “Any hype is dead.” Fans of Game of Thrones are venting their frustration after the latest House of the Dragon update. Although filming is already complete, many believe the upcoming season will arrive far too late to reignite excitement.
We’re only three months away from the premiere of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the second Game of Thrones spin-off that’s been earning praise for its fresh, grounded approach. But as previously reported, 2026 will deliver twice the Westeros experience with the debut of House of the Dragon Season 3. It should be cause for celebration — yet fans can’t forget how the previous season wrapped up.
Season 2’s Finale Left Fans Cold
Or maybe you’ve already forgotten. HBO Max’s fantasy prequel bowed out with a rather anticlimactic ending — no major battle, no grand spectacle, just a setup for the coming war known as the “Dance of Dragons.” While that should make for an explosive start to Season 3, the fanbase seems far less enthusiastic this time around, as shown by Reddit discussions (via GamesRadar).
“It’s sad, but I’m not even slightly excited for the new season.”, “Any hype for this died long ago.”, “I miss when shows filmed new seasons while the last one was still airing — and when we got more than eight episodes.” wrote multiple longtime George R. R. Martin fans. And to be fair, they should be used to waiting, since the author still hasn’t finished The Winds of Winter.
But jokes aside, they have a point. It’s reasonable for studios to wait for early performance data before greenlighting a new season, but once a hit is established, momentum must be maintained. Unfortunately, House of the Dragon Season 3 took a long time to complete — filming wrapped only recently, more than a year after production was halted.
In the past, it wasn’t unusual for shows to start production mere weeks after a new season premiered. Now, streaming platforms spend months analyzing data before committing to renewals, forcing crews to restart almost from scratch. Still, there are some bright spots: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is reportedly filming its second and third seasons back-to-back.
The Witcher serves as another example: Season 4 premieres on Netflix this October 30, with the fifth and final season already shot — ensuring fans will see Geralt of Rivia’s story conclude in 2026. As for House of the Dragon, fans can only hope the fourth and final season won’t be delayed again, but current timelines suggest otherwise.
