MOVIE NEWS – After a bad experience with Bruce Willis, Luc Besson decided to create his own action star — and he couldn’t have chosen better: The Transporter became a massive box-office hit.
We’ve previously discussed how The Transporter launched Jason Statham into stardom, turning him into one of the greatest action heroes of the 21st century. But things could have gone very differently if the film’s two writers hadn’t had a rough time working with Bruce Willis during the filming of a sci-fi movie.
Luc Besson and Bruce Willis Had Opposite Working Styles
The Fifth Element was a major success when it premiered and is now regarded as a cult sci-fi classic, but the production didn’t go as smoothly as Luc Besson had hoped, according to Robert Mark Kamen, who co-wrote the film. While nothing catastrophic happened, there were creative clashes due to Willis being unaccustomed to Besson’s fast-paced directing style. “It was tough, but Luc managed to make it work. Afterward, he told me: ‘We need to create our own stars.’ And that’s exactly what we did with The Transporter. We created Jason,” Kamen told Uproxx.
Besson later explained how he and Willis eventually made peace: “I made a deal with Bruce — instead of working five days a week, we’d shoot four. He agreed, and we went all out during those days,” he told Screen Rant.
When Kamen and Besson reunited for The Transporter, they chose a lesser-known actor with potential. Statham, who had previously appeared only in Snatch and one other film, turned out to be the perfect fit. Interestingly, the actor — now known for The Meg 2: The Trench — earned just $750,000 for the role, despite the film’s eventual success.
Available on Disney+, The Transporter follows an ex–Special Forces operative who makes a living transporting dangerous packages without asking questions — until one mission changes everything. The explosive mix of stunts and style helped cement Statham as a household name in action cinema.
