Two pieces of news related to Sony Santa Monica Studio—though one topic isn’t directly tied to that team.
In recent months, plenty of rumors have swirled about a new God of War. Reportedly, two separate games are in development: one is a Metroidvania, and the other is the next mainline entry. Amid talk that the main series could head to Egypt, the actor behind Kratos also voiced interest in that setting, while clarifying he doesn’t know anything yet, so it’s just wishful thinking. At the recent London Comic Con, Christopher Judge—Kratos’ actor—was asked about a sequel to God of War. He said he’d love the next game to be set in Egypt.
Judge explained that taking Kratos to Egypt would feel like coming full circle for him, nodding to his role as Teal’c in the 1997 TV series Stargate SG-1. He added he still knows nothing about a third game, so it’s best to wait. Whatever location is chosen, he believes it will be great. Moreover, the latest rumor about an Egyptian setting comes from a reliable source, almost confirming that Egypt will be the backdrop for the next God of War.
Three images have leaked from the canceled God of War multiplayer title (reportedly developed at Bluepoint Games), showcasing the environment. Interestingly, the setting shift would have brought Kratos back to the Greek-era games. You can clearly see temples and buildings reminiscent of the Greek saga. There are also armories stocked with weapons and shields designed specifically for multiplayer combat. Allegedly, these armories were owned by Hades, the Greek god of the underworld, who might have played a significant role.
The game apparently took place after the events of God of War III (2010), though it’s unclear whether the story would have been considered canon. The Norse sagas also influenced the project, as evidenced by several statues. The game never saw the light of day, likely because Sony feared another catastrophic failure.
