Wicked Part Two Will Make Everyone’s Jaw Drop

MOVIE NEWS – Wicked Part Two can march confidently toward the Oscars. It can again expect at least 10 nominations, and it will probably turn far more of them into statuettes than last year’s first part, when it won two out of ten, writes Variety. For the moment, the entertainment trade magazine has been surveying critics’ opinions on social media, and those writers speak in extremely appreciative terms about the second part of the musical.

“One of the most dynamically evolving friendships in pop culture history has been given an ending that is both epic in scale and heartbreakingly gentle,” says Destiny Jackson of Deadline. “Fans of the Broadway show will especially love the tingling surprises with which this film spoils them.”

Variety’s chief arts writer, Jazz Tangcay, shares that view: “The film exceeds all expectations, and director Jon M. Chu places the story’s final emphases in brilliant fashion. He extends the story of Elphaba and Glinda, and at the very end he lands a precisely aimed emotional gut punch. Cynthia Erivo is marvelous, and everyone will have to hold on tight, Ariana Grande raises the stakes so high. The world built in the film, the costumes and Alice Brooks’ incredible cinematography are unforgettable. I cannot wait to see it again.”

Chris Murphy of Vanity Fair likewise emphasizes that the film unfolds and deepens the message of the stage production, and that the two leads’ astonishing performances leave everyone’s jaw on the floor.
