Metal Gear: A Fan Is Making an Anime Adaptation! [VIDEO]

Hopefully, Konami won’t oppose the project, which has been in the works for a long time. However, knowing the company, it’s not out of the question.

We love it when fans reimagine games because there’s less at stake, and we don’t have to worry about accessibility or profitability. Mitchell Hammond reimagined the 1987 MSX2 Metal Gear game as an anime based on later installments in the series — and he did it all without AI image generation! While Metal Gear Solid was a huge success, the franchise began with the 2D, 8-bit Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 for Japanese MSX computers. Kojima Hideo’s distinctive style is particularly evident in Metal Gear 2. These games depict Snake’s battle with Big Boss, as well as his body double and the protagonist of Metal Gear Solid V, Venom Snake.

Hammond skillfully combines the original artistic elements of Metal Gear, the inspiring action films of the 1980s, and the later designs of Yoji Shinkawa. He has also created character sheets for Metal Gear’s amusing main enemies, a Time Magazine cover featuring a cheerful, cheeky Big Boss, and several trailers and cutscenes for a complete animated adaptation of Metal Gear. Hammond’s first trailer, released in 2022, features scenes from Metal Gear set to the game’s original chiptune music and accompanied by animated recreations.

In August, he uploaded a video of Venom driving the original Metal Gear and launching a missile. His interpretation of the VR head-tracking pilot helmet particularly resembles Akira Toriyama’s technology and vehicle designs. The Metal Gear MSX animation seems to be a “if it gets done” side project for Hammond. Support him on Patreon or Ko-fi.

In any case, this raises a question. How long will it take Konami to realize that its fans can do better than the Japanese company itself? After all, Kojima hasn’t worked there for a decade, and the franchise hasn’t gotten very far without him. They’ve made a multiplayer Metal Gear Solid V spin-off, Metal Gear Survive, and a remake of MGS3, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, not counting the first collection that has already been released and the second one that is still in development.
