TECH NEWS – Although the device from the Cupertino-based company is likely still months away from being announced, we are already hearing about its pricing strategy.
The iPhone Fold, as we’re calling it in the absence of an official name, may not be the most expensive Apple device, but it will certainly be the second most expensive. According to Fubon Research analyst Arthur Liao, global smartphone shipments are expected to decline by 4% to 1.2 billion units in 2026 compared to the previous year. In China, smartphone shipments are expected to decline by 3% to 275 million units next year. Total iPhone shipments are expected to decline by 4% to 234 million units compared to last year. The cost of components is expected to rise next year, with total material costs increasing by 5-6%. DRAM contract prices have risen by more than 75% compared to the fourth quarter of 2024.
Regarding Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhones, Liao expects total sales of 15.4 million units over the devices’ lifetimes, based on a 7% penetration estimate. Liao expects the iPhone Fold to sell only 5.4 million units in 2026. The analyst estimates that the retail price will be $2,500, about twice that of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, due to the increased cost of the display panel, hinge, and other lightweight components. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is priced at $1,999.
The iPhone Fold will have a book-like design with a main panel measuring 7.74 inches (19.66 cm) and a cover display measuring 5.49 inches (13.95 cm). It will have a resolution of 2,713 x 1,920 and an aspect ratio of 4:3. Instead of Face ID, it will feature Touch ID. There will be no visible crease on the display. The device will feature an A20 Pro system on a chip (SoC), 12 GB of RAM, and a C2 5G modem. The rear dual camera will have a maximum resolution of 48 MP. There will also be a display-integrated camera with a maximum resolution of 24 MP. The battery capacity will be between 5,400 and 5,800 mAh, and the device is expected to be available to the public in the second half of 2026.
So, the iPhone Fold won’t be cheap.
