Larian Prepares for an AMA Due to the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence!

Swen Vincke, the head of Larian Studios, has decided to come clean and answer some questions.

The past few days have not been great for Larian or Vincke. Instead of enjoying the success of their new game Divinity, showcased at The Game Awards, the studio has had to deal with backlash over Vincke’s comments regarding generative AI. To clarify the situation, Vincke announced today that Larian will host an AMA on Reddit in the new year, where players can learn more about how the developers work.

The AI controversy erupted this week after Vincke mentioned in an interview how the studio’s developers use generative AI tools. He made it clear that the studio does not use generative AI for game content such as graphics, text, or sound, but this did little to help. Perceived support for AI resulted in immediate and fierce backlash. Vincke attempted to smooth things over with a later tweet explaining more precisely how Larian developers use generative AI, but this did not satisfy most fans. Now the plan is for the developers themselves to join the debate.

“It’s been a week since we announced Divinity, our next RPG, and a lot has been lost in translation. At Larian, our DNA is agency. Everything we do is for the benefit of our teams, games, and players. We strive for a better workday and a better game. Our successes come from empowering people to work in their own way and bring out the best in their craft so we can create the best RPGs possible. In that context, it would be irresponsible not to evaluate new technologies.

However, our processes are always evolving. Where they are not efficient or do not align with who we are, we will make changes. To provide more insight, after the holiday break we will host an AMA featuring different departments, where you’ll be able to ask us questions directly about Divinity and our development process. We will announce the date next year. In the meantime, happy holidays!”, wrote Vincke.

It was interesting to observe the fierce backlash to Vincke’s AI-related comments—after all, just a year ago he was widely praised for calling out issues in the gaming industry during his Game Awards speech. Whether this AMA will change opinions remains to be seen. At the very least, it allows for a more nuanced conversation.
