The French publisher’s internal network was hacked, as we reported yesterday. However, it seems that Ubisoft does not want to discuss the issue publicly.
On December 27, the official Rainbow Six Siege Twitter account acknowledged the incident affecting the game, but this does not reflect the actual situation. Over the weekend, hackers ran rampant in the game, and players reported numerous irregularities, such as billions of credits and extremely rare skins that were only available to developers. There were also chaotic bans and unbans, including cheeky messages sent via the global ban ticker. The chaos continued until Ubisoft shut down the servers completely, as they confirmed on Twitter. They later announced that no players would be penalized for spending the randomly received credits and that all transactions since the start of the incident would be reversed.
They also clarified that the sudden flood of bans was part of the security breach and that the messages visible on the ban ticker were not Ubisoft’s doing, though this was probably never in question given that one of the messages stated that Yves Guillemot was mentioned in the Epstein files. The extent to which the game and its users were compromised is unclear, but the game has since restarted. However, the in-game marketplace is still not working. Bleeping Computer reports on unverified claims made via VX-Underground by various hacker groups who claim responsibility for the chaos.
Clarification post, previous post about Ubisoft lead to some confusion. That’s my fault. I’ll be more verbose. I was trying to compress the information into 1 singular post without it exceeding the word limit.
Here’s the word on the internet streets:

Understandably, players are shocked by all this. Numerous posts have appeared on the Rainbow Six subreddit, warning players not to spend their credits, which were obtained unfairly. Players have shared memes about the incident and voiced their frustration in various posts. One user claimed that they “didn’t know they would miss this sh*tty game so much.”
It is currently unknown when the marketplace will be available again. Although this has resulted in long queues, the official Rainbow Six account has announced that the issue has been resolved.
