MOVIE NEWS – The new Lara Croft doesn’t want to watch the previous Tomb Raider movies: “I like them, but I have to make my own version.” Sophie Turner confirms that filming for the series is just around the corner. To prepare, yes, she has played… and she has been training for months.
Much like the new Resident Evil film, Prime Video’s Tomb Raider reboot seems determined to leave the franchise’s earlier movie adaptations in the rearview mirror. That, at least, is the takeaway from recent comments by Sophie Turner, the actress chosen to portray Lara Croft in Amazon & MGM Studios’ upcoming TV series.
The Game of Thrones star says she has been searching for a personal angle on the character, and that means deliberately avoiding both of Angelina Jolie’s films, as well as the version starring Alicia Vikander. “I’m playing the video games and reading the comics. I have the Colossal Collections, which are like 500 pages. I’m doing a bit of everything, but without really focusing on previous interpretations, because I have to create my own vision. So, as much as I like them, I can’t watch them now,” she explained on SiriusXM (via GamesRadar).
Historically, the most famous archaeologist in gaming has had a complicated relationship with the big screen. The original Jolie-led movies turned into a commercial phenomenon that helped launch the American actress into even greater stardom, yet they were also heavily criticized by reviewers and a sizeable chunk of audiences for the shallowness of their scripts. And what about Vikander’s film? It was received somewhat more kindly by the specialized press, but very few people saw it as the definitive take on Lara Croft – which helps explain why, in 2026, we’re once again discussing a brand-new production backed by Prime Video.
Filming for the Series Is Imminent
Will the third attempt finally strike gold? We should find out in the coming months, because all signs suggest this project is moving forward unless something unexpected happens. “I can’t say much, but my preparation began in February. I’ve been training for a long time, almost a year now, and we’re going to start filming. (…) I’m very excited. I feel ready and I consider myself very fortunate to have such a good relationship with Amazon; I’m eager for the world to see what we do with Lara and Tomb Raider. I think it’s going to be something special,” Turner said – and for now, we’ll take her word for it.
She also mentioned that since being cast, she trains “eight hours a day, five days a week.” In other words, we can expect a Lara Croft in peak physical condition, fully prepared for the heroic feats and acrobatics fans of these wildly successful video games have come to expect.
