MOVIE NEWS – Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey shattered several major records during its opening weekend and earned $264 million worldwide. In just four days, the epic also surpassed the entire theatrical gross of another highly anticipated Hollywood production.

Christopher Nolan has broken a personal record with The Odyssey, which earned $124.5 million in the United States during its opening weekend. The film is now Nolan’s biggest domestic debut for a movie that is not a sequel. That is hardly surprising, as fans and readers of Homer’s epic had been anticipating the adaptation since it was confirmed in 2024. The wait was long, but The Odyssey has finally been unleashed, further establishing Nolan as one of Hollywood’s most visionary auteurs. He is following in the footsteps of another prestigious filmmaker whose sci-fi epic swept through theaters last month.

Globally, The Odyssey also delivered the biggest opening weekend of Nolan’s career. Its $264 million worldwide debut surpassed The Dark Knight Rises at $249 million and The Dark Knight at $198 million. The Odyssey premiered in 73 international markets and immediately outperformed competing releases in 48 territories. The film now holds the third-biggest opening of 2026, behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie with $372.5 million and Toy Story 5 with $312 million. Just four days after its launch, The Odyssey had also surpassed the final worldwide gross of Disclosure Day.

Disclosure Day Sprinted at the Box Office but Fumbled in the End

Disclosure Day ended its theatrical run with a worldwide total of $234.7 million. Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller was also highly anticipated before its release, arriving when interest in unidentified aerial phenomena was at its peak. The film sprinted out of the gate with a $44.5 million domestic opening, but later collided with franchise juggernauts such as Supergirl and Toy Story 5. June was also still dominated by breakout independent hits including Backrooms and Obsession. Disclosure Day started strongly, but a 62 percent drop during its second weekend cast doubt on its longevity. The film left theaters less than six weeks after its release and arrives on premium video-on-demand platforms on July 21.

The Odyssey surpassed the entire gross of Disclosure Day after just one weekend, thanks in part to the so-called “Nolan Effect.” The director has been building a following since his 1998 debut, Following, but his popularity expanded significantly when he began taking on large-scale projects, starting with Batman Begins. Nolan now has 13 feature films to his name, and his latest undertaking is arguably his most ambitious yet. He accepted the challenge of adapting a seminal, 3,000-year-old epic that stands among the foundational texts of Western literature. That created enormous expectations among fans and critics, but just like Spielberg, Nolan proved that he was capable of meeting the challenge.

Spielberg and Nolan are widely considered two of Hollywood’s most prominent auteurs, and both took enormous risks to earn that status. Production delays and ballooning costs on Jaws almost destroyed Spielberg’s career, while Nolan’s 2000 independent film Memento was rejected by several distributors before finally being approved. Jaws propelled Spielberg’s filmmaking career, while the success of Memento paved the way for Batman Begins, which offered an early glimpse of what a Nolan epic could look like. His previous film, Oppenheimer, was widely regarded as both a masterpiece and a major cinematic event.

It is still far too early to predict the long-term performance of The Odyssey or whether it will cross the $1 billion mark, but the film had initially been projected to earn around $200 million worldwide during its opening, and it has already comfortably surpassed that figure. The next two weeks will reveal whether the film has lasting box-office momentum, and it still has plenty of time before Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in theaters.
