Warhammer’s CEO Says AI Is Being Forced Onto Our Phones – So Games Workshop Banned It

Games Workshop says even its senior managers aren’t particularly enthusiastic about AI, so the company has banned its use and complains that it’s “included on our phones or laptops whether we like it or not”. The CEO behind all things Warhammer adds: “we do not allow AI generated content or AI to be used in our design processes”.

Games Workshop, the company behind Warhammer, says it does not permit generative AI in its products, and while some senior managers have looked into the technology, “none are that excited about it yet.”

The remarks come from Games Workshop CEO Kevin Rountree in the company’s half-year financial report covering the back end of 2025, where it declared revenue of £332.1 million ($445.9 million USD), up from £299.5 million ($402.1 million USD) in 2024.

Rountree then lays out GW’s “very cautious” internal approach to AI, stating that “we do not allow AI generated content or AI to be used in our design processes or its unauthorised use outside of GW including in any of our competitions.” That includes the Golden Demon painting competitions, which banned AI in 2024 after it emerged that one of the previous year’s winners had used AI-generated artwork created by Midjourney as part of a printed backdrop behind their miniature.

While Rountree notes that the company is “allowing those few senior managers to continue to be inquisitive about the technology,” the overall message is still very clearly anti-AI. He also points out that during the six months in question GW spent its time “hiring more creatives in multiple disciplines from concepting and art to writing and sculpting” rather than cutting staff and replacing people with hallucination-prone chatbots.

There’s also a surprisingly personal note of frustration in the complaint that “AI or machine learning engines seem to be automatically included on our phones or laptops whether we like it or not.” It’s genuinely amusing to see that even the CEO of a multi-million-pound company is irritated by AI being shoved into every app and service, regardless of whether it makes any sense there.

In the Warhammer 40,000 universe, AI is forbidden – it’s labelled “Abominable Intelligence” within the Imperium and treated as tech-heresy by the Adeptus Mechanicus. It’s funny to see the real-world company behind Warhammer 40,000 echo a similarly hostile position, even if they presumably don’t share the tech-priests’ enthusiasm for turning employees’ skulls into flying camera drones.
